Slovenia healthcare budget faces deficit and NGO funding scrutiny

Slovenia's healthcare sector is facing significant financial challenges, characterized by budget deficits and debates over the allocation of public funds. The Ministry of Health has identified a deficit of approximately 200 million euros within the ministry, while a budget rebalance has reportedly introduced an additional 700 million euros in spending requirements.

Discussions have emerged regarding the distribution of funds to non-governmental organizations (NGOs). While significant sums are allocated to patient associations and organizations like the Red Cross for rehabilitation and medical programs, scrutiny has been placed on ideological groups. Specifically, reports indicate that LGBT-focused organizations, such as Legebitra, have received over 1 million euros from the Ministry of Health over nearly five years, including over 1 million euros for programs such as HIV and hepatitis C testing.

These financial discrepancies occur alongside broader concerns regarding the efficiency of the healthcare system and the impact of recent salary reforms on public service budgets.
