North Macedonian family killed in fatal Slovenia motorway accident

Three North Macedonian citizens died in a severe traffic accident on the A1 motorway near Unec, Slovenia. The victims, a 74-year-old woman and two children aged 4 and 11, were pronounced dead at the scene. The family, originally from the village of Zhitineni in the Centar Zhupa municipality, resided in Ravenna, Italy.

The collision occurred when an Audi A4, bearing Italian license plates, struck the rear left side of a truck trailer that had stopped in an emergency lane due to a mechanical defect. According to Slovenian police, the vehicle first hit a protective barrier before the impact. Two other passengers, a 33-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, were injured; the woman was transported to the hospital by helicopter.

Preliminary investigations by the Koper Police Administration indicate that while the adults were wearing seatbelts, the two children in the rear seats were not. The driver of the Audi tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Authorities are currently investigating whether driver fatigue played a role in the accident. The North Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that its embassy in Ljubljana is in communication with Slovenian authorities to follow the legal proceedings.
