Slovenia implements AI assistant and safety warnings for waste management

In Slovenia, new initiatives are addressing waste management challenges through both digital technology and public awareness. Okolje Piran has launched ‘Živa’, an AI-powered digital assistant designed to help users correctly sort waste. The assistant utilizes national guidelines to provide answers for nearly 600 types of waste, supporting users in multiple languages including Slovenian, English, Italian, Croatian, German, and Hungarian. The project was co-financed by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy.

Meanwhile, in Maribor, the waste management company Snaga highlighted the dangers of improper waste disposal. Workers at sorting facilities report finding hazardous items in mixed municipal waste, such as batteries, electronics, and needles, which pose significant fire and injury risks. They also noted an excessive amount of food waste, specifically bread, and unusual items like deceased animals, emphasizing the need for more responsible consumer sorting habits.
