Slovenia implements average speed cameras on highways
Slovenia has introduced a new sectional speed control system across four major highway segments to improve road safety. Unlike traditional radar that measures instantaneous speed at a single point, these new cameras record the time a vehicle enters and exits a monitored section. The system then calculates the average speed based on the distance traveled and the time elapsed.
The monitored locations include the A1 between Logatec and Vrhnika (towards Ljubljana), the A2 between Ljubljana Brod and Vodice (towards Kranj), the A2 between Grosuplje and Ivančna Gorica (towards Novo Mesto), and the A1 between Podmele and Ločica (towards Maribor, in the Trojane tunnel area).
Fines for speeding violations range from 40 euros to 1,200 euros, depending on the severity of the infraction. For example, exceeding the limit by up to 10 km/h results in a 40-euro fine, while exceeding it by more than 60 km/h can lead to a maximum fine of 1,200 euros. The system aims to discourage drivers from slowing down only in front of cameras and then accelerating immediately after.
