Slovenia issues special three euro collector coins

Slovenia issues special three euro coins that serve as collector's items. According to the Bank of Slovenia, these bimetallic coins are legal tender only within Slovenia. While merchants in the country are legally required to accept them, their primary purpose is numismatic rather than everyday transactions.

Unlike standard two euro commemorative coins, which are valid throughout the eurozone, these three euro coins hold only numismatic value outside of Slovenia. The nominal value of three euros matches the sale price for standard minting techniques, whereas other collector coins are typically sold at higher prices to discourage regular use in payments.

The design and issuance process takes approximately two years, involving public suggestions and government approval. The current coin commemorates the centenary of the death of poet Srečko Kosovel, featuring a design inspired by his collage technique. Other recent themes have included the European Capital of Culture, Nova Gorica, and the centenary of artist Miki Mustra.
