Slovenia: Local political shifts and proposed mayoral term limits

In Slovenia, a political initiative has launched to amend the Local Elections Act. Led by Anton Rop and Urška Klakočar Zupančič, the proposal seeks to limit mayors in municipalities with over 3,000 residents to a maximum of three consecutive four-year terms. The goal is to raise democratic standards by ensuring the mayoral office is viewed as a temporary position rather than permanent ownership. Proponents must collect 5,000 signatures by December 21 to trigger the legislative process.

On a local level, the Lista Burja party has officially submitted its candidacy for the Ajdovščina municipal council elections. The non-partisan group, represented by Deputy Mayor Matjaž Bajec, aims to expand its current four-member presence to at least five seats in the 26-member council. Their platform focuses on improving quality of life through increased kindergarten capacity, school expansions, and improved traffic flow between the town and rural areas.
