Slovenia mandates microchipping and registration for all owned cats

Slovenian pet owners are being urged to microchip and register their cats before the end of 2026 to take advantage of state subsidies. Starting January 1, 2027, all owned cats must be microchipped and entered into the Central Register of Domestic Animals (CRHŽ) in accordance with the Animal Protection Act.

The Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection (UVHVVR) is currently providing financial support to offset the costs of these services. During this transitional period, the state has already disbursed approximately 2.5 million euros to assist owners. In the final four months of the transition, the subsidy is set at 8 euros per cat, which is applied directly to the service cost.

Registration numbers are rising, with over 141,000 cats already entered into the central register. The mandate aims to improve animal welfare by ensuring reliable identification for lost or abandoned pets and enhancing population control and oversight.
