Slovenia marks anniversary of Primorska annexation

Slovenia marked the anniversary of the annexation of Primorska to the motherland on September 15. The national holiday commemorates the implementation of the Paris Peace Treaty in 1947, which assigned a large part of the Primorska region to Yugoslavia following World War II.

A central ceremony was held at the Lipica Stud Farm, organized by the Municipality of Sežana. Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar served as the keynote speaker, reflecting on the historical struggles of the region. She noted that during the interwar period, fascist authorities attempted to suppress the Slovenian identity by banning the language, closing cultural and social institutions, and forcing the Italianization of schools and surnames.

The holiday's name was recently changed from the 'Return of Primorska' to the 'Annexation of Primorska' following a parliamentary decision in October 2024, a move intended to reflect historical facts, despite some local debate regarding the terminology.
