Slovenia mushroom foraging season begins
The mushroom foraging season has arrived in Slovenia, following recent rainfall and favorable temperatures. Foragers are advised to exercise extreme caution, picking only species they can identify with absolute certainty to avoid poisonous lookalikes.
In Slovenia, there is a legal limit of two kilograms of mushrooms per person per day for personal use, with exceptions for single mushrooms exceeding that weight. It is also prohibited to harvest protected species. To preserve the forest ecosystem, foragers should avoid damaging the growth sites or underground structures and should use breathable containers like baskets rather than airtight packaging.
For those who have gathered mushrooms, such as chanterelles, recipes like mushroom risotto are recommended. Preparation involves sautéing onions, garlic, and sliced mushrooms, followed by rice, white wine, and vegetable broth.
