Slovenia National Assembly to decide on referendum date for development law

The Slovenian National Assembly is deciding on a decree to schedule a legislative referendum regarding the Intervention Measures Act for the Development of Slovenia. If approved, the referendum is expected to take place on December 6.

The law, originally passed in May 2026, includes measures such as reducing VAT on basic foodstuffs and certain energy sources, introducing a cap on social contributions, lowering taxes on specific rents, and implementing new solutions for healthcare, pensions, and long-term care.

Political divisions remain sharp. The governing coalition and the Resnica party defend the law as a developmental tool that benefits workers, retirees, and young people. Conversely, the opposition and labor unions argue the law favors the wealthy. The referendum initiative was driven by unions, which gathered over 47,000 signatures after a previous attempt to block the referendum was overturned by the Constitutional Court.
