Slovenia celebrates Reformation Day and linguistic heritage
Slovenia observes Reformation Day on October 31, a public holiday marking the 16th-century religious movement that laid the foundations for the Slovenian literary language. The holiday honors key Protestant reformers, most notably Primož Trubar, who published the first Slovenian books, the Catechism and the Abecednik, in 1550.
Other significant figures include Jurij Dalmatin, who completed the first full translation of the Bible into Slovenian in 1584, and Adam Bohorič, who published the first Slovenian grammar that same year. These contributions are credited with establishing the written language and fostering national identity.
In official messages, President Nataša Pirc Musar emphasized the importance of preserving the Slovenian language and cultural heritage for future generations. Prime Minister Janez Janša described the Reformation as an early step toward Slovenian independence. Minister of Culture Ignacija Fridl Jarc also highlighted the deep connection between Slovenian culture and its Christian roots during state celebrations in Murska Sobota.
