Slovenia pension statistics show rising retiree numbers and demographic shifts

Data from the Institute for Pension and Disability Insurance (ZPIZ) shows that in July, 659,618 people received pensions in Slovenia. The average net old-age pension was 962.42 euros, a slight decrease of 0.50 euros compared to June. There is a significant disparity in payouts, with 33,554 people receiving less than 500 euros, while the highest pension reached 4,583.95 euros.

The pension adjustment formula was recently updated under the ZPIZ-2O legislation, aligning pensions with half of the growth in gross wages and half of the growth in the cost of living from the previous year. This resulted in two increases this year: 4.2 percent in February and 1 percent in March.

Demographic trends indicate a growing number of retirees. The ratio of insured workers to pensioners stood at 1.51 in the first half of the year. Projections from the European Commission and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia suggest further aging of the population, with estimates indicating that by 2040, Slovenia could have 84,000 more pension recipients and 54,000 fewer employees than in 2022. Experts suggest that voluntary supplementary pension insurance (PDPZ) will become increasingly important for maintaining living standards as the public system faces demographic pressure.
