Slovenia potato yields drop significantly due to drought
Severe droughts across Europe have significantly impacted Slovenia’s potato production. According to estimates from the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia, the country faces a harvest loss of between 30 and 90 percent this year.
In 2025, Slovenia produced only about one-third of its total potato consumption. This decline is attributed to several factors, including the drought, rising fertilizer costs, pesticide use restrictions, and low purchase prices. Local farmers, such as Janez Jambrosic from Velike Lasce, report losing up to half of their individual harvests.
Despite these challenges, the village of Lipovci recently hosted the 26th international festival of roasted potatoes, bringing together farmers and enthusiasts to celebrate the national dish.
