Slovenia proposes tightening migration and residence permit laws

The Slovenian government is proposing significant changes to its social and migration policies, specifically through amendments to the Aliens Act. A central component of these changes involves doubling the amount of money a foreign worker must prove they have in their account to obtain a residence permit. Currently, the required monthly amount is 507 euros.

Non-governmental organizations and human rights groups have raised alarms regarding these proposals. The Legal Center for Human Rights (PIC) notes that the new requirements for family reunification would be extremely high: an individual would need to show 1,014 euros in monthly net income for themselves, plus additional amounts for partners and children. For a three-member family, this would require a monthly income of approximately 2,200 euros, which exceeds the average net salary in Slovenia of roughly 1,700 euros.

Critics, including Goran Lukić of Workers' Counseling, argue that these measures will disproportionately impact citizens from Western Balkan countries attempting to reunite with their families. There are also concerns that the policy may lead to an increase in single migrants from more distant regions, such as Nepal, Bangladesh, and India, rather than family units.
