Slovenia: Security concerns persist one year after Aleš Šutar death
One year after the fatal assault on Aleš Šutar in Novo Mesto, local mayors and social work centers report that security conditions in southeastern Slovenia and Posavje have not significantly improved. The incident, which occurred in October 2025, triggered massive protests involving over 10,000 people and led to the resignations of the Minister of Justice and the Minister of the Interior.
In response to the tragedy, the government implemented the Šutar Law, which introduced measures such as suspending social assistance for repeat offenders and tightening conditions for child benefits based on school attendance. While mayors noted initial improvements due to increased police presence and enforcement of social transfer suspensions, the Constitutional Court's decision to temporarily halt these suspensions in March has reportedly caused security conditions to revert to previous levels. Crime rates remain at similar volumes, and social work centers indicate that the measures have not significantly increased Roma community integration into the education system or improved general social standing.
