Slovenia sees rising secondary school enrollment despite lower birth rates

In Slovenia, the number of secondary school students is steadily increasing despite a declining birth rate. Data from the Ministry of Education shows that while primary school enrollment is decreasing due to smaller generations, the number of secondary students rose from 75,786 in the 2021/2022 school year to 86,759 in the most recent period.

Officials clarified that this trend is due to larger birth cohorts from approximately 2008 to 2011 currently entering secondary education, rather than an influx of immigrants. While about 500 students from abroad join secondary schools annually through Slovenian language courses, the Ministry stated this does not significantly impact the overall total.
