Slovenia sovereignty day celebrations spark political controversy

The upcoming state celebration of Slovenia's Sovereignty Day in Koper has triggered significant political tension. President Nataša Pirc Musar announced she will attend only as a guest rather than a speaker, following a decision by the government to allow Prime Minister Janez Janša to be the sole orator, despite initial agreements for both to speak.

Controversy also surrounds the exclusion of flag bearers from the Association of Fighters for the Values of the National Liberation Army (NOB). Jelko Kacin, president of the coordination committee for state celebrations, stated that flags bearing the five-pointed star were not invited because that symbol was used by the Yugoslav People's Army (JLA) during its attacks on Slovenia.

Opposition parties, including the Freedom Movement and the Left, have criticized the government's decision to label the event as the “35th anniversary of Slovenia's liberation,” arguing this implies the country was occupied until October 1991. These groups, along with the Social Democrats, have expressed intentions to boycott the event. President Pirc Musar further criticized the arbitrary renaming of the state holiday and the removal of protocols involving the presidential salute to the flag.
