Slovenia suicide rates show decade-long decline

Suicide rates in Slovenia have shown a declining trend across all age groups over the last decade, according to data released by the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Last year, 336 people died by suicide in Slovenia, consisting of 261 men and 75 women. This maintains a ratio where men die by suicide approximately four times more frequently than women. The suicide mortality rate was recorded at 15.77 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Saška Roškar, head of the NIJZ suicide prevention program committee, noted that while the long-term trend over the last 20 to 30 years is encouraging, the current rate remains significantly above the European average. The decline since 2016 is particularly notable among men. Older populations remain the most vulnerable group, as risk factors increase with age, particularly for men.
