Slovenia to hold four referendums on October 11

Slovenian voters are set to participate in four referendums on Sunday, October 11. This includes one legislative referendum regarding amendments to the Parliamentary Inquiry Act and three consultative referendums. The consultative questions address the abolition of mandatory RTV Slovenia contributions, the conditioning of social assistance on community work for able-bodied individuals, and local voting rights for EU citizens.

The legislative referendum on the Parliamentary Inquiry Act has drawn significant political debate. The ruling coalition supports the law, while the opposition argues it could turn inquiry commissions into tools for political intimidation. Prime Minister Janez Janša defended the measure, stating that commissions are intended to examine the accountability of political officials.

In separate legislative developments, the Slovenian government has withdrawn proposed amendments to laws concerning higher education and scientific research, which aimed to slow the growth of budget funding in these sectors. Additionally, the government has proposed changes to the Road Traffic Rules. These amendments include new procedures for alcohol testing—using breathalyzers only as preliminary tests—and regulations for the use of approved automated driving systems.
