Slovenia to hold referendum on development law on December 6

Slovenian voters will decide on the implementation of the Act on Intervention Measures for the Development of Slovenia during a referendum scheduled for December 6, 2026. The law, passed by the National Assembly in May 2026, includes measures such as reducing VAT on basic foodstuffs and energy, changing tax treatments for self-employed individuals and farmers, and adjusting social security contribution bases.

Supporters, including the current government and various political parties, argue the law will lower living costs and stimulate economic growth. Conversely, trade unions and opposition parties have organized the referendum, alleging the law undermines social security and benefits the wealthy. A public opinion poll conducted in the coastal municipalities of Koper, Izola, and Piran shows varying levels of support and opposition, with a significant portion of respondents remaining undecided.
