Slovenia to review citizenship of 93 Russian nationals

The Slovenian government has ordered a review of the citizenship status of 93 Russian nationals who obtained Slovenian citizenship through extraordinary naturalization since 2015. The decision was prompted by Russia’s prolonged aggression against Ukraine and the subsequent implementation of sanctions.

Slovenia’s Intelligence and Security Agency (Sova), the Ministry of Defence’s Intelligence and Security Service (OVS), and the police will investigate whether there are grounds for revocation under Article 26 of the Citizenship Act. This law allows for the removal of citizenship from individuals living abroad if their actions harm the international or other interests of the Republic of Slovenia, such as belonging to organizations that undermine the constitutional order or acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service.

The investigative agencies are required to report their findings to the Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration by September 30. Among those identified as having received citizenship through this process is Viktorija Krivolucka, a close friend of the President of the Republic.
