Slovenian health agency warns as sand‑filled toys recalled for asbestos

The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) in Slovenia has warned that a range of sand‑filled children's toys sold in Europe have been withdrawn because they contain asbestos, a known carcinogen. Recalled items include sand‑filled figurines, drawing kits, stretchable sand‑filled figures, "magic" sand and stress‑relief toys.

NIJZ advises households to handle any potentially contaminated toys with latex gloves and a FFP2/FFP3 mask, to wet the sand before cleaning and to wipe surfaces with a damp cloth. The agency stresses, "Do not sweep or vacuum, as this can raise asbestos fibers into the air." All contaminated material must be placed in double‑sealed plastic bags and disposed of as hazardous waste at approved collection centres.

The notice follows reports from families who discovered that toys used at home released sand‑dust, prompting concerns about long‑term health effects for children.
