Slovenia wolf population expands geographically

Researchers participating in the European Life Wild Wolf project have reported that the wolf population in Slovenia is stable and vital, with an estimated 137 individuals and 16 packs identified for the 2024/2025 season. While numerical growth has stabilized in recent years, the wolves continue to expand their geographic range.

A significant indicator of this expansion is the confirmation of a new reproductive pack in the Pohorje region, an area where wolves had not been present for over half a century. Experts note that wolves are highly adaptable and will likely continue to occupy new territories in the coming years.

As the population spreads, the focus is shifting toward coexistence and the prevention of damage to domestic livestock. While wolves primarily prey on wild ungulates like deer and wild boar, they do view domestic animals as potential prey. Researchers highlighted the risk of ‘surplus killing,’ where a wolf may kill multiple animals in an enclosed pasture during a single attack.
