Slovenian coast faces major traffic delays due to Belveder roadworks
Ongoing renovation of the Belveder roundabout between Izola and Strunjan is causing severe traffic congestion along the Slovenian coast. Drivers have reported travel times of up to two hours for routes between Piran and Koper that typically take much less time.
During daytime hours (7:00 to 19:00), traffic is managed via manual alternating one-way flow by workers using radios, while traffic lights handle the flow during nighttime and other hours. The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency (DRSI) stated that night work is not feasible due to noise concerns for nearby residents and the inability to implement a different traffic regime.
Traffic loads during peak periods are estimated to exceed 1,000 vehicles per hour in a single direction. The situation was further complicated by the Istrian cycling marathon, which caused temporary road closures. Piran Mayor Andrej Korenika has previously called on Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec to take immediate action regarding the ongoing disruptions.
