Slovenian deputy Žan Mahnič cleared of ethical code violations

The Presidency of the National Assembly of Slovenia has ruled that SDS deputy Žan Mahnič did not violate the ethical code for deputies following controversial social media posts.

The decision follows two proposals for review submitted by Deputy President Nataša Avšič Bogovič of the Freedom Movement. The first proposal concerned Mahnič’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the Constitutional Court, where he referred to judges as “fools” and “radical leftists” following a ruling on a legislative referendum.

The second proposal addressed comments directed at Freedom Movement deputy Janja Sluga, involving harsh language and an AI-generated image. Although Avšič Bogovič proposed sanctions in the form of a public reprimand, the Presidency did not receive sufficient support to adopt the measures. Consequently, both proceedings have been concluded without a finding of a code violation.
