Slovenian film ‘Belo se pere na devetdeset’ premieres in New York
The Slovenian film ‘Belo se pere na devetdeset’ (Washing White at Ninety) held its New York premiere at the Chain NYC film festival. The screening took place at the Chain Theatre in Manhattan, attended by members of the Slovenian community in the United States.
Directed by Marko Naberšnik, the film is based on the autobiographical novel by Bronja Žakelj, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The story follows Bronja as she faces a cancer diagnosis similar to the one that claimed her mother, weaving personal struggle with humor and optimism against the backdrop of the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Following its run at the Sarajevo Film Festival, the film has become a significant domestic success in Slovenia, surpassing several Hollywood productions in local viewership. Rick Hamilton, executive director of Chain NYC, noted that the film’s honest and vulnerable storytelling aligns with the festival’s mission to support independent creators and personal narratives.
