Slovenian health institute warns energy drinks harm youth

The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) in Slovenia cautions that energy drinks are not harmless refreshments. They contain high levels of caffeine and other stimulants that can increase dehydration, elevate heart strain, and disrupt sleep, mood, blood pressure and concentration, especially in children and adolescents.

Common misconceptions include the belief that energy drinks are suitable sport drinks or that sugar‑free versions are safer. NIJZ emphasizes that true sports drinks restore fluids and electrolytes, while energy drinks do not hydrate. The institute advises young people to obtain energy through adequate sleep, regular exercise, balanced nutrition and proper hydration, and promotes its "Choose Your Energy" campaign with the slogan "Real energy doesn’t come from a can."
