Slovenian healthcare facilities face leadership and financial challenges

Public health institutions in Slovenia are facing leadership transitions and financial challenges.

In Hrastnik, the Health Center (ZD Hrastnik) continues to operate under an acting director, Lara Gornik, following the resignation of Sebastjan Ašenberger in April. The institution has dealt with significant financial deficits, including a reported 200,000 euro gap in 2024, and ongoing staffing shortages. A call for a new director is not expected until the first half of 2027, though current efforts are focused on financial stabilization and recruitment.

Meanwhile, the hospital in Slovenj Gradec has officially opened applications for a new professional director. The hospital is currently managing a 3.5 million euro deficit for the first seven months of the year and is undergoing a restructuring program. The current acting director, Vačovnik, and business director, Vladimir Topler, have both highlighted the difficulties of managing the facility amidst severe personnel shortages and organizational challenges.
