Slovakia approves 2027 budget with projected 4.94% GDP deficit

The Slovak government has approved the public administration budget for 2027–2029, projecting a deficit of 4.94% of GDP for 2027. While Prime Minister Robert Fico described the budget as a stabilizing measure that avoids new taxes and adheres to EU fiscal rules, opposition leaders have criticized it as a budget of stagnation.

Opposition figures, including Michal Šimečka and Viliam Karas, expressed concerns regarding the rising deficit and the potential for economic decline. Former minister Tomáš Taraba has called for radical cuts, including the abolition of certain ministries, and criticized the decision to delay the repeal of the transaction tax until late 2027, suggesting it serves partisan interests rather than fiscal health.

Economically, Slovakia's GDP growth is forecasted to accelerate to 1.8% in 2027, outperforming the Eurozone average. The budget includes 250 million euros for energy price compensation and 100 million euros for climate and drought measures. Despite the projected deficit, the government aims for gradual consolidation to reach a 4% deficit by 2029.
