Slovenian Janša Government Announces Audits and Faces Cultural Funding Criticism

After taking power in early June 2026, the new administration led by Prime Minister Janez Janša began a series of financial reviews. Ministers Anže Logar (economy, labour and sport), Ignacija Fridl Jarc (culture) and Janez Cigler Kralj (agriculture, forestry and food) publicly disclosed budget shortfalls, including an €82 million deficit, and ordered forensic examinations of the previous government’s handling of projects and EU cohesion funds. Logar warned, “Drži, manjkajo sredstva, kar je velik problem,” stressing that the gaps were not the fault of the current finance minister but stemmed from earlier administrations.

Former culture minister Asta Vrečko criticised the Janša cabinet for its approach to cultural financing, alleging that funds were diverted during the 2023 flood response and that the budget left the sector under‑resourced. She said, “Izgovor, da sredstev ni v proračunu, za kakršnokoli prekinitev razpisov, je pesek v oči,” and pointed to specific film projects that received emergency support while broader cultural programmes faced cuts.

The government’s dual focus on financial transparency and cultural budgeting signals its early policy priorities and has drawn public debate across Slovenia.
