Slovenian lawmaker Luke Mesec calls for referendum on costly intervention bill

Left party MP Luke Mesec warned that the "intervention law" slated for a parliamentary vote could impose more than €1 billion in public‑finance burdens and trigger deep changes to the pension system and employment rights. He said the draft, prepared by parliamentary groups of NSi, SLS, Fokus, Democrats and Resnica and initially supported by SDS, is being pushed through without social dialogue, public consultation, or involvement of any government ministry.

Mesec urged a consultative referendum, calling the process unprecedented in Slovenia and condemning the rapid, right‑leaning turn in legislation. He appealed for broader public debate and cautioned that the bill could undermine gains of the previous government. The opposition parties SD and others also warned against hasty adoption and signalled support for the referendum. Amendments are expected in the second reading.
