Slovenian National Council discusses climate policy and ETS impact

The National Council of the Republic of Slovenia hosted a professional consultation titled ‘The Price of Climate Policy: ETS, Economic Competitiveness, and the Future of Slovenian Energy’. The discussion focused on the impact of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and green transition measures on energy prices, industrial competitiveness, and the reliability of the electricity system.

Mitja Gorenšček, State Councilor and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, emphasized that the goal was not to deny climate change but to facilitate an open exchange of expert opinions and practical economic experiences regarding the current ETS framework. He noted that the green transition carries significant costs that affect domestic production and job preservation.

National Council President Marko Lotrič stated that while the ETS is a vital factor in energy, fundamental changes to the system require a European consensus. He noted that Slovenia must clearly present its interests and seek support from other member states. Additionally, State Secretary Rok Šimenc addressed the need for a sensible green transition that works in tandem with economic competitiveness.
