Slovenian Parliament strips Robert Golob of immunity

The Slovenian Parliament has voted unanimously to strip former Prime Minister Robert Golob of his parliamentary immunity. The decision, which received 75 votes including Golob’s own, allows prosecutors to proceed with a criminal investigation into allegations of improper interference in police personnel matters.

The investigation stems from a report by former Minister of the Interior Tatjana Bobnar. Bobnar alleges that after Golob assumed the premiership in 2022, he exerted political pressure to force specific personnel changes within the police force. Bobnar resigned from her post in December 2022 following these alleged pressures.

Golob has denied all accusations. While he previously indicated he would not rely on immunity to resolve the case quickly, the prosecution required formal parliamentary authorization to continue the proceedings against him as a sitting member of parliament. The case remains a point of significant political contention within the Slovenian legislature.
