Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar injured in highway crash

On Friday afternoon a police convoy returning from Croatia to Slovenia was involved in a collision in the Kastelec tunnel near Ljubljana. The 52‑year‑old driver of the presidential Mercedes‑Benz V300 failed to keep the required safety distance and struck the rear of an Audi that was part of the escort. President Nataša Pirc Musar suffered a broken collarbone; a fellow passenger sustained serious injuries, while the other occupants escaped unharmed. Both drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Police have opened a criminal investigation for negligent causing of a traffic accident against the presidential driver, and the case has been referred to the Specialised State Prosecutor’s Office. The material damage is estimated at about €37 000. The president was released to home care after hospital treatment. The police continue to examine the exact circumstances of the crash.
