Slovenia marks 35th Sovereignty Day amid political tension
Slovenia marked its Sovereignty Day in Koper, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the departure of the last Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) troops from its territory in October 1991. The central state celebration was marked by significant political friction and public demonstrations.
Prime Minister Janez Janša delivered the keynote speech, where he reflected on Slovenia's path to independence and its economic development. He noted that while the country once neared the standards of a "second Switzerland," it has since faced years of lost opportunities and currently sits at approximately 91 percent of the EU average. His speech was interrupted by loud whistling and protest shouts from a crowd gathered near the event site, necessitating police intervention to warn protesters to move away.
In a notable political rift, President Nataša Pirc Musar declined to attend the official ceremony. She cited opposition to the government's actions, specifically the renaming of the holiday and the exclusion of certain veteran groups from the official protocol. She emphasized that state holidays should honor the nation rather than individual political representatives.
Other officials, including President of the National Assembly Marko Lotrič, attended the event, emphasizing that sovereignty requires ongoing responsibility regarding economic, energy, and territorial security.
