Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša Receives €110,000 State Compensation in Patria Case

Former Slovenian prime minister and SDS leader Janez Janša was awarded more than €110,000 in compensation from the state for an unlawful imprisonment and damage to his reputation stemming from the Patria corruption case. The court ordered a lump‑sum payment of 40 average salaries (about €65,000) plus earlier awards of €26,400 and €39,216, with interest, bringing the total to roughly €111,000. Janša had been convicted in 2014 of accepting gifts for illegal mediation, sentenced to two years in prison and a fine, and served part of the sentence in an open prison on Dob. The conviction was later annulled and the case expired, prompting his claim for compensation for the loss of liberty and the impact on his honor. The compensation amount is significantly higher than in comparable cases, according to the portal Oštro that obtained the court decisions.
