Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša's New Government Launches Fiscal Review and Reform Programme

Prime Minister Janez Janša's coalition took office in early July and within the first month announced a slate of measures aimed at stabilising the Slovenian economy and public services. Key actions include reviving the Museum of Slovenian Independence, raising defence spending, streamlining the public administration, introducing tax reforms and addressing urgent issues in health care and long‑term demographic care.

The parliamentary Finance Committee has urged the new government to conduct a six‑month audit of the public spending carried out by the previous Robert Golob administration and to identify ways to cut expenditures, targeting a reduction of about €500 million to meet Maastricht fiscal criteria. Committee members highlighted a current budget deficit of €930 million and warned that the new intervention law could increase the deficit by roughly 1 % of GDP if not curbed.
