Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, 46, announced his retirement a week after supervising the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in East Rutherford, United States. He became the first Slovenian to referee a World Cup final, which ended 1‑0 to Spain after extra time.

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) named Vinčić the tournament’s best referee, and the Italian referees’ association awarded him the prestigious Giulio Campanati prize. Vinčić has been on FIFA’s international list since 2010 and joined UEFA’s elite panel in 2019, officiating matches at Euro 2020 and the Euro 2024 semi‑final.
