Slovenia to hold four referendums on October 11
Slovenia is set to hold four simultaneous referendums on October 11, 2026, consisting of one legislative referendum and three consultative referendums. The legislative referendum concerns amendments to the Parliamentary Inquiry Act, a move that critics, including Nika Kovač and Goran Forbic, warn could lead to the reintroduction of a ‘political police’ by granting MPs excessive power. Conversely, supporters argue the changes are necessary to prevent abuses and protect witnesses.
The three consultative referendums address: the right to vote in local elections for EU citizens (excluding third-country nationals), the abolition of the mandatory RTV Slovenia contribution, and whether social assistance for able-bodied individuals without objective work barriers should be conditioned on performing socially useful work.
Approximately 1,698,526 voters are eligible to participate. The State Election Commission has outlined voting procedures, including early voting from October 6–8 and main voting on October 11. For the legislative referendum to be rejected, a majority of valid votes must be cast against it, provided those votes represent at least one-fifth of all eligible voters.
