Slovenian unions launch signature drive for referendum

Slovenian trade unions have launched a campaign to collect at least 40,000 verified signatures to trigger a referendum on the law regarding intervention measures for the development of Slovenia. The collection process, which includes physical locations at administrative units and digital options via e-government, must be completed by October 5.

The Constitutional Court recently ruled that a referendum on this law is permissible, following a previous decision by the National Assembly that had deemed it inadmissible. Unions argue the law is harmful to society, claiming it benefits only a small group while negatively impacting social welfare funds and employees.

Specific points of contention include a proposed social cap on gross salaries at 7,500 euros, changes to taxation for self-employed individuals, and regulations regarding retirees who continue to work. Unions are advocating for income tax scale adjustments and higher reimbursements for commuting and meals to benefit all employees rather than a select few.
