Slovenia’s Po Slovenija race launches demanding ‘king’s stage’ in Gorenjska

The 32nd edition of the Po Slovenija cycling race will feature a decisive fourth stage on 20 June. The 190‑kilometre ‘king’s stage’ starts and finishes in the Gorenjska region, climbs more than 4,000 metres of elevation and includes the race’s highest point at Vršič (1,611 m). Officials presenting the route included Klemen Srna of the Development Agency Sora, Kranj mayor Matjaž Rakovec, race director Bogdan Fink, BSC Kranj chief Jure Meglič and tourism representative Brian Schiffrer.

Organisers highlighted the stage as a showcase for elite sport and a promotional boost for the region. Meglič said, “Pokažemo lahko napredek kolesarske infrastrukture, hkrati pa pozivam državo, da čim hitreje vzpostavi tudi glavno kolesarsko povezavo Rateče–Ljubljana.” Schiffrer added that recent infrastructure projects aim to open a Bled‑Bohinj cycling link this summer.

The stage also recalls Primož Roglič’s breakthrough victory on the same climb in June 2015, when he won the “Three Kings” finish and took the yellow jersey. Roglič later became an Olympic champion and multiple Grand Tour winner. He remembered the win, saying, “Komaj sem čakal ciljno črto …” underscoring the climb’s lasting significance for Slovenian cycling.
