Slow Food promotes freshwater fish amid ocean overfishing concerns

On the Day of the Fish, the organization Slow Food Altmühlfranken is advocating for the consumption of freshwater fish as a sustainable alternative to seafood. Dieter Popp of the organization highlighted that while demand for species like sea bass and turbot has doubled over the last 50 years, overfishing affects more than 37 percent of commercial fishing grounds in the world's oceans.

Environmental challenges such as rising ocean temperatures, plastic pollution, and inadequate wastewater treatment are further threatening marine ecosystems. Popp suggests that regional freshwater fish from local pond cultures can serve as a responsible substitute to mitigate the impact of ocean depletion.

In Höchstädt, the Fischerverein 1954 recently held its annual fishing festival at the Halber-Mond-Weiher. Despite the event's success, local officials were briefed on ecological threats to the water body. The club's chairman warned that the invasive aquatic plant Karolina-Haarnixe is spreading in the pond, potentially displacing native species and lowering oxygen levels, which poses a risk of fish die-offs.
