Slow Food promotes regional freshwater fish to combat overfishing

Slow Food organizations in Germany are promoting regional freshwater fish as a sustainable alternative to ocean fish to combat the global issue of overfishing. In Altmühl-Franken, the focus is on the importance of inland fish as a responsible dietary choice, noting that over 37% of commercially utilized fishing grounds in the world's oceans are currently overfished.

In Saarland, the “Fischtime” initiative runs from August 14 to 30. Participating restaurants will highlight the culinary diversity of local freshwater species, such as trout and char, to reduce long-distance transport emissions and support the local economy. The campaign features partnerships with local producers like Marc Rosengarten, who utilizes breeding ponds and fishes in the Saar and Moselle rivers to provide high-quality, responsibly produced fish.
