SM-liiga attendance lags behind major European hockey leagues

Attendance figures in the Finnish SM-liiga are significantly lower than those in other major European ice hockey leagues. Despite the high stakes of playoff series, such as the Tampere derby between Tappara and Ilves, crowds have failed to meet expectations.

In a decisive sixth game at the 12,700-capacity Nokia Arena, fewer than 8,000 spectators attended. Previous games in the series saw attendance numbers between 8,282 and 9,333, with no matches selling out. Factors such as weekday scheduling and dynamic ticket pricing may have influenced these figures.

In contrast, leagues in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland are seeing much higher engagement. For example, the German club Kölner Haie consistently fills its 18,600-capacity arena during the playoffs, highlighting a disparity in fan engagement between Finland and its European counterparts.
