SMA demands information from ENAEX following nitric acid spill in Mejillones
The Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente (SMA) has requested detailed information from ENAEX S.A. following a nitric acid spill in Mejillones. The incident occurred on Friday, October 9, when a contractor's truck overturned while transporting nitric acid in IBC containers into a maritime container.
The spill resulted in the breakage of containers and the release of the chemical onto public roads. Following four citizen complaints, the SMA has granted ENAEX five business days to submit a comprehensive report. This report must include the identification of the transport company, the planned route, safety inspection records, the total volume of the spill, and the affected surface area.
Additionally, the company must provide its emergency response plan, reports on the management and authorized destination of hazardous waste, soil sample analyses, and evidence of compensation provided to the Fire Department that attended the emergency.
