SMAE reports water shortages in Mamoudzou and Koungou
SMAE (Mahoraise des Eaux) has reported significant difficulties in accessing potable water across several sectors in Mamoudzou, Koungou, and Petite Terre. The shortage follows a series of recent incidents, the most recent being a major leak of 300 m3/h identified on one of the largest sea-lines in the lagoon.
Technical teams are scheduled to conduct dives to locate the precise site of the leak and prepare for repairs. Due to limited available stocks, SMAE is implementing staggered water distribution schedules to allow reserves to reconstitute. Affected areas include Mtsapére-Bonovo, Doujani, Zi-Kawéni, Kawéni Village, and several others, with varying opening and closing times for water access.
Authorities advise residents to ensure all taps are closed during the restoration process and to let water run slowly until it becomes clear. For safety, it is recommended that water used for food and drink be boiled during the first half-day following the restoration of service.
