Smajlaj Fisnik extradited to Italy for international drug trafficking
Albanian national Smajlaj Fisnik has been extradited to Italy following a long period as a fugitive. He was escorted by the I-CAN (Interpol Cooperation Against ‘Ndrangheta) unit. Fisnik had been sentenced to 27 years and 6 months in prison by the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro for international drug trafficking and criminal association.
The arrest is a key outcome of the ‘Gentleman II’ investigation, which targeted international drug distribution networks with operational bases in the Cosenza province and branches in Germany. The investigation involved extensive cooperation between Italian authorities, including the Guardia di Finanza, and police forces from Germany and Belgium through a Joint Investigation Team (SIT), with support from Europol and Eurojust.
In May 2023, the investigation led to precautionary measures for 25 individuals and the seizure of assets valued at approximately 3.8 million euros.
