Small business BAS lodgement and compliance best practices

Small business owners in Australia can reduce the stress and errors associated with Business Activity Statement (BAS) lodgement by implementing consistent, year-round record-keeping habits. Key strategies include using accounting software like Xero, QuickBooks, or MYOB to automate transaction categorization and reconciling accounts weekly rather than quarterly.

Compliance requires maintaining valid tax invoices for any purchase over $82.50 (including GST) to claim GST credits, with records being required for five years. For quarterly lodgers, deadlines fall on 28 October, 28 February, 28 April, and 28 July. Utilizing a registered tax or BAS agent can provide approximately four extra weeks of time for three out of the four quarterly deadlines.

Failure to lodge on time results in penalties. From 1 July 2026, a penalty unit will be valued at $364, meaning small entities could face maximum penalties of $1,820 per statement.
