Small business policy forum discusses strategic support for economic recession

The Small Business Policy Association held its first Future Policy Forum in Seoul to discuss strategies for overcoming long-term economic recessions. Experts and government officials addressed the complex challenges facing small business owners, including rising debt, business closures, and shifting consumption patterns toward online platforms.

A key theme of the forum was the need to transition from uniform financial aid to strategic, customized support. Using Japan’s retail market as a case study, presenters noted that Japanese small businesses successfully repositioned themselves from economic underdogs to central pillars of local communities through regional integration strategies.

Participants emphasized that the South Korean government should act as an infrastructure provider, helping businesses adapt to changing environments rather than just compensating for losses. Proposed solutions include implementing management diagnosis systems to identify specific business needs and fostering entrepreneurship and technological capabilities to enhance self-sufficiency among small business owners.
