Small businesses face closures in Vancouver and Montclair due to rising costs

Independent small businesses in Vancouver and Montclair are facing closures due to rising costs and lease issues.

In Vancouver, the Kitsilano-based brunch cafe and mochi donut shop Their There is scheduled to close on September 13 after eight years of operation. The business announced that it reached the end of its current lease term and was unable to reach an agreement with the landlord that aligned with its operational needs. No relocation plans have been announced.

In Montclair, Beyond the Bagel will also close on September 13 after more than 30 years in business. Owner Tina Ganan stated that the closure is driven by thin finances, high rents, and increasing costs. Ganan reported that attempts to negotiate with the landlord were unsuccessful and indicated that the financial strain would lead to bankruptcy.
